Save Money, Keep Your Car Looking Sharp

While you can't keep it on the road forever, here are some easy DIY tips that can extend your car's life well into its golden years.

How to extend your car's life
  • Change vital filters and fluids

Even the most mechanically challenged drivers know to change a car's oil and oil filter on a regular basis. But other fluids (like antifreeze, brake, and transmission, for example) and filters also need regular maintenance. "This is important because over time they, too, lose important properties-like their ability to remove heat and lubricate, and their ability to prevent rust and freezing," says long-time DIY-er Tony Deltuva from East Meadow, New York. "For example, changing your air filter helps your car breathe easier and its engine last longer. If your air filter is clogged, your engine is not performing properly. It also hurts your fuel economy because the engine is working harder to get more air." STP® Power Steering Fluid* and STP Brake Fluid* are good choices for topping up reservoirs. You can also keep fuel injectors and fuel systems clean with STP products like STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner* and STP Fuel Injector & Carburetor Treatment*.
  • Check your cooling system

Making sure your car's cooling system is working properly and coolant levels are correct is as important as making sure the engine is well lubed and can potentially save you thousands of dollars in repairs. "A cooling system failure can result in your engine literally melting down," warns car enthusiast Jay Cronin from Atlanta, Georgia. "Make sure the coolant is at the right level and check hoses for wear marks or leaks."
  • Drive Smarter

The way you drive has an effect on how long your car will last. "Drive gently. Accelerate slowly. Anticipate your braking so you can avoid panic stops," says driveway mechanic Josh Condon from Los Angeles, California. But also give your car time to warm up so the oil is freely circulating through the system and fully lubricating internal components before you leave the driveway. "All of these things will lessen the wear and tear on your car and possibly enhance fuel-efficiency," says Condon.
  • Keep It Clean

Taking care of the exterior of your car by regularly washing and waxing it is possibly the most visible way to extend the life of your car. And don't forget about the interior. Vacuuming the carpet will help prevent it from wearing out. Use Armor All® Ultra Shine Wash & Wax* on your car regularly to battle bugs, bird droppings, and air pollution. Armor All® protectants*, including tire and wheel cleaners, will help keep your ride in tiptop shape.
